At almost 90, Ms. Stern is tired of life, yet the impression she gives is anything but. After surviving the Holocaust, she has lived in Berlin for more than half her life; she came there from Israel with her husband and stayed. She has a daughter and is especially close to her granddaughter. They enjoy activities together, go to parties, spend a lot of time with her granddaughter’s friends. Ms. Stern prefers being around younger people – “after all, they weren’t alive back then.” Just before her 90th birthday, Ms. Stern asks her doctor to assist her suicide, but he refuses. So she decides to take matters into her own hands. She encounters obstacles, but also many surprising moments that make life worth living. Ahuva Sommerfeld will never be forgotten in her first acting role, which Anatol Schuster created for her. She posthumously received an award for her role as Ms. Stern at the film festival Achtung Berlin!, where the film also received the German Film Critics’ Prize and the Prize for the Best Feature Film.
