When Emeric Pressburger approached Ufa with a screenplay about the failure of a young love, director Robert Siodmak, who had just started working there, took it on. A small misunderstanding in a Berlin bed and breakfast populated by odd types brings about a farewell instead of a happy ending. With its close portrayal of the milieu and Eugen Schüftan's perceptive camera work, the film is still worth seeing today. Pressburger's first film is one of the first German talkies.
